In butane extraction, butane is used as a solvent that extracts the active substances from plant material, in this case pollen. The pollen is placed in a container which is then filled with butane. Butane dissolves the desired substances in the pollen, creating a solution. This solution is then separated from unnecessary pollen components such as plant material and wax.

Subsequently, it is important to clean the solution of butane and extracted substances from residual butane by a process known as "purging", during which the butane evaporates, creating a concentrate.
